The primary cause of sleep paralysis is that of not being fully awake when the attacks happen. The attacks occur when dreaming you are suddenly woken from your sleep and your brain responds much faster than your body. When this happens you feel as if the things you were dreaming about are actually real. In trying to respond to it you find that you cannot even move a single muscle.
This is because the process of coming out of sleep was never meant to be a sudden event but a gradual one.
